Funeral services planned for two Bristol officers killed in line of duty

Funeral services are set for the two Bristol Police Department officers killed in the line of duty during an ambush-style shooting last week.

A joint funeral service for Sgt. Dustin DeMonte, 35, and Officer Alex Hamzy, 34, will be held at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford at 11 a.m. on Friday. Members of the community who want to attend are asked to arrive no later than 9:30 a.m.

Walk-through calling hours for Hamzy will be held on Wednesday from 12 to 8 p.m. at the Lyceum Banquet Hall at 181 Main Street in Terryville, according to his obituary posted on the Scott Funeral Home’s website. Parking will be located at the Terryville Fairgrounds at 171 Town Hill Rd., and shuttles will be available. Route 6 in the area of Lyceum Banquet Hall will be closed to all traffic, according to the Bristol Police Department.

“If you wish you may send the family a gesture of love as you pass by,” the obituary for Hamzy states.

A private wake service will be held on Thursday in North Haven for DeMonte, according to Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano in a Facebook video Monday.

DeMonte and Hamzy were fatally shot multiple times responding to a domestic disturbance call on the night of Oct. 12. Fellow Bristol Officer Alec Iurato was injured in the shooting and fired the fatal shot that killed the suspect, Nicholas Butcher.

Hamzy, who served with the Bristol Police Department for eight years, was born Dec. 16, 1987, in Bristol where he attended Bristol Eastern High School. He was dedicated to his family and friends, his family said. He loved spending time with his parents, Ahmad and Salma Hamzy, his wife, Katie, and their dog Gizmo, his sisters, Donna Hamzy Carroccia and Rania Hamzy Audi, and their spouses, his nephews and his friends.

Hamzy often said how lucky he was to have so many friends who were more like brothers from childhood through to adulthood, the obituary says.

“Alex will forever be in our hearts, and we will remember him fondly through our shared photos, memories and stories,” the family said. “The Hamzy family and the Scott family extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Sgt. Dustin DeMonte and our deepest gratitude to Officer Alec Iurato for his bravery and heroic acts of service.”

In lieu of flowers, the Hamzy family established the Officer Alex Hamzy Memorial Fund to honor his memory at https://www.mainstreetfoundation.org/officer-alex-hamzy-memorial-fund.
