Funeral services, procession announced for fallen Las Cruces officer

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) will be closed on Wednesday, Feb. 21 to allow all personnel to attend funeral services for fallen Las Cruces Police officer Jonah Hernadez.

Funeral services and the procession route for Hernandez, an El Pasoan, have also been announced.

The police-led procession will begin at around 9 a.m. Wednesday from Martin Funeral Home, located on 1460 George Dieter Dr.

The procession will then arrive at Abundant Church, located on 1000 Valley Crest Drive.

The funeral mass will begin at 10 a.m. and those who wish to attend are asked to enter from Castner Drive as access from Escobar Drive will be limited. No video or audio recording will be allowed inside the church.

Following the church service, LCPD and El Paso Police motor units will lead the procession to Hernandez’s final resting place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery located on 401 S. Zaragoza Rd. It’s anticipated the procession will take 15 to 20 minutes to arrive at the cemetery.

Hernandez will be laid to rest in the St. Jude section of the cemetery.

Those who wish to view the procession from the sidewalk can do so along Escobar Drive from Zaragoza to Burgundy Drive, along Burgundy Drive from Escobar to North Loop Drive, or along Zaragoza from Americas Avenue to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Entrance to the St. Jude section of Mount Carmel is from the middle driveway on the west side of the cemetery along Zaragoza Road.

Those in the procession are asked to enter the south or middle driveway and park along the curbs in the southern-most, undeveloped sections of the cemetery.

Law enforcement officers from the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police will be patrolling within Las Cruces city limits on Wednesday.

Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch — the 911 call center — will maintain operations and dispatch responsibilities during the day. The non-emergency phone number is (575) 526-0795. Persons wishing to report an emergency should dial 911.

LCPD offices located at 217 E. Picacho Ave. and at the East Mesa Public Safety Complex, 550 N. Sonoma Ranch Blvd. will reopen at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22.
