Funeral services set in El Paso for Texas DPS Special Agent Anthony Carlos Salas

A portion of Zaragoza Road will be closed Thursday evening due to funeral services for a Texas Department of Public Safety agent from El Paso killed in a crash.

Texas DPS Special Agent Anthony Carlos “AC” Salas, 37, died on Saturday at a San Antonio hospital from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash on Jan. 21 near Eagle Pass, Texas.

Salas was accompanying a U.S. Border Patrol agent who crashed while transporting six undocumented migrants in Maverick County.

A viewing will take from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Crestview Funeral Home, 1462 N. Zaragoza Road.

The Salas family has requested only family, friends and law enforcement attend the visitation, DPS said.

The northbound lanes of Zaragoza Road will be closed for a block from Don Haskins Drive to Pellicano Drive from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the funeral home viewing, DPS-West Texas Region said in a tweet.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at St. Pius X Catholic, 1050 N. Clark Drive. A rosary will be recited from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. and honor guard and military honors.

"Special Agent Salas was a devoted family man who deeply loved his wife and children," DPS said in a tweet. "He served his community and upheld his duty to his fellow Texans. His selfless sacrifice and heroic service will never be forgotten."

More than $50,000 has been raised to help his family by a GoFundMe fundraising account, which had a goal of $10,000.

Salas was in the U.S. Marine Corps before joining Texas DPS in 2013. He was stationed in El Paso, first as a trooper with the highway patrol and then as a special agent with the Criminal Investigations Division. Salas was also a member of the DPS West Texas Special Response Team.
