Funerals set for Oakdale woman and Woodbury man killed in northern Minnesota crash

Madison “Madi” Warren loved going to the movies, hanging out with her grandparents and traveling.

Friends and colleagues described the Oakdale woman, who was killed in last weekend’s single-car crash in St. Louis County, as a “radiant, joyful, empathetic, stone-cold weirdo, which fit her perfectly,” according to her obituary.

Joseph “Joey” Trowbridge, the Woodbury man killed in the Saturday crash, was always “full of life and lived every minute to the fullest,” according to his obituary. “He was known for his huge smile, quick wit, and the largest heart anyone could have. He loved hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and jeeping.”

Warren and Trowbridge, both 23, graduated from Mahtomedi High School in 2018. The two were passengers in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by another Mahtomedi High School Class of 2018 graduate, Darren A. Tenney, 23, of New Richmond, Wis. The crash occurred around 2:45 a.m. Saturday on a curve on U.S. 8 in Floodwood, Minn., about 45 miles west of Duluth.

Tenney was trapped in the pickup and airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Sunday, according to a statement from the St. Louis County sheriff’s office.

Deputies learned of the crash after receiving an automated 911 call from an iPhone stating that the owner had been in a severe crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash remained under investigation on Thursday, but speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors, said sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Sathers. A decision as to whether Tenney will be charged in connection with the crash has yet to be made, he said.

After graduating from Mahtomedi High School, Warren graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a degree in marketing communications. She was an employee of Bottlecapps, “working her first marketing job with amazing colleagues and mentors whom she loved,” her obituary states.

Warren was “bossy” from an early age, according to her obituary, “often instructing her grandparents what to do on walks and where to go.”

“She shared a joy of movies with her dad — from Harry Potter to Marvel movies to ‘Breaking Bad,’ it was always a conversation,” her obituary states. “Her life revolved around her friends, and she had many she loved. Her friends were a constant in her life, having some of the same friends from kindergarten who are still by her side. She had a love for travel (taught at an early age from her mom) and was always looking for a new place to go or a friend to visit.”
