Funk legend George Porter Jr, Trombone Shorty and more coming to Norfolk’s Bayou festival

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Some big time musical acts from the Big Easy are coming to Norfolk’s Town Point Park this May for the Bayou Bon Vivant: Cajun Music & Food Festival.

Headliners for the three-day festival from May 17-19 include funk legend George Porter, Jr., Grammy-winning brass band Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Dumpstaphunk, a nationally-touring funk/jazz band. All are featured in David Simon’s critically-acclaimed HBO show “Treme” that’s set in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Porter, 76, is best known for helping to pioneer funk music with his band The Meters in the 1960s. Since then he’s played with artists from Dr. John and David Byrne to Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

Tickets for the festival start at $10 per day, though you can buy three-day passes for a special price of $15 through midnight on Friday, February 16 using promo code BAYOU2024.

The festival also features an assortment of New Orleans’ famous foods, from gumbo and jambalaya to crawfish and beignets.
