Furman Paladins basketball score vs. Virginia Cavaliers: Live updates from NCAA tournament

Furman basketball has a chance to pull off an early upset in the NCAA Tournament and get the biggest win in program history.

The Paladins, seeded No. 13 in the South Region, play a first-round game Thursday (12:40 p.m., TruTV) against No. 4 seed Virginia at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

Furman (27-7) won the Southern Conference and is in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1980. The Paladins’ only win in the tournament came in 1974. The Paladins beat South Carolina that year, 75-67, when the event had just 25 teams.

Virginia (27-5) won the national championship in 2019 but didn’t make the tournament last season. The Cavaliers in 2018 became the first No. 1 seed to lose a first-round game, falling to UMBC. They also lost in the first round two years ago to Ohio from this same No. 4 seed.
