A nonprofit in Michigan is seeking donations of furniture.

Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan is seeking gently used furniture to help more than 100 metro Detroit families. The organization is seeking 700 items, including mattresses, box springs, dressers, dining sets, and sofas according to a news release.

The executive director of Furniture Bank, Robert Boyle, said that the referrals for families needing furniture always increase in the spring. He also said that inflation has had an effect.

"We have seen a rise in the number of families waiting for furniture, and this is due to high inflation, which affects families living in poverty harder than most," said Boyle in a written statement.

"Ninety percent of the households we’re helping have annual incomes of $20,000 or less. When you consider that most of these households have children, it’s easy to understand why furniture isn’t affordable for families struggling to keep up with rent, groceries, utilities, and transportation costs. Providing for your family and getting ahead is even more difficult if you aren’t getting a good night’s rest in a warm bed or living in the comfort and stability of a furnished home."

How to help

To make tax-deductible furniture donations, call 248-332-1300 or go to Furniture Bank's website to coordinate a pickup day.

The organization will remove items from your garage or porch at no charge. For $50, their movers will remove things such as mattresses, box springs, dressers, dining sets, and basic living room furniture.

Furniture Bank can also remove items such as china cabinets, desks, and armoires at an additional charge.
