FUSD special election to fill vacant Fresno High seat is set. Who’s running, how to vote

Four candidates filed to fill the vacant Fresno Unified Board of Trustees seat.

The special election for Fresno High-area voters is April 12.

The Fresno County Superintendent of Schools called the special election after the Fresno Unified school board reversed a decision in August to appoint a community member to fill the Trustee Area 5 seat that became vacant last year after the death of long-time trustee Carol Mills.

The filing period ended Friday. The four candidates are:

  • Russ Allen

  • Daniel Renteria

  • Andrew Fabela

  • Andy Levine

How can voters vote?

A ballot will be mailed to active registered voters living in the area about early March before the election takes place, according to Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters James Kus.

Voters living within the jurisdiction will have the option to receive in-person assistance at one of three voting centers. People can also vote in person at the voting centers.

Kus said there will be at least two drop boxes where voters can drop off their ballots. Voters also have the option to mail in their votes.

Will the new redistricting maps affect the election?

According to Kus, newly approved FUSD trustee redistricting maps will not affect the upcoming special election.

The person who wins the special election will remain in the seat through the end of the current term. The seat will go up for re-election in November 2024, when the new district map will take effect.
