Future Black History Makers: Meet Autumn Braxton, a first-grader at Mary McArthur Elementary

Autumn Braxton, 6, the daughter of LaKeisha and Joseph Saunders, is in first grade at Mary McArthur Elementary School.

She was nominated as a Fayetteville Observer Future Black History Maker because "Autumn is a feisty 6-year-old who is independent and creative," writes Assistant Principal Shirley Braxton-McLaurin, who nominated her. "Her vocabulary is well beyond her years. She is truthful about her thoughts and feelings. Autumn attempts to do all assigned tasks on her own. If she needs help she will ask but only after making an attempt on her own. Autumn is an only child. She makes friends easily and is well-mannered. She will say thank you and please. She loves to have dinner with her family and eagerly says grace before she eats. Autumn loves her fluency passages and can't wait to read them with her teacher. She loves school and learning. Most of all she loves to make people laugh. She can be goofy at times and has the funniest expressions. She also gives the best hugs. Autumn has the desire and mindset to be whatever she wants to be."
