Future Black History Makers: Meet Carrington Ethridge, a fifth-grader at New Century

Carrington Ethridge, 10, the daughter of William and Chaya Ethridge, is in fifth grade at New Century International Elementary School.

She was nominated as a Future Black History Maker because "she embodies the qualities that set her up to be a leader in not only our school but in her community," writes Porcia Brown, instructional coach at New Century International. "Carrington attends a Chinese immersion school and has been a part of the immersion program since she was in kindergarten. She has tackled this task with grace and poise and has maintained great grades in both Chinese and English. Her math scores are wonderful as well. While maintaining these grades, Carrington has also set her eyes on running for student body president as well as joining clubs at our school (Safety Patrol and Yearbook Committee). It is her drive, her passion, and her dedication that really motivates her to do what she does. ... Carrington has started her own bracelet-making business to raise money for her own car. She truly enjoys making the bracelets as it gives her an outlet and she saves the money to purchase the car of her dreams in the future. (A BMW for now, but I'm sure that will change!) ... Carrington is caring, sweet, loving, and is very personable with her classmates."

What her parents say

What makes your child a Future Black History Maker? Carrington is definitely one of kind. She’s quiet but still has the ability to stand and be noticed. Carrington is immediately loved by everyone she meets. She has always been no-nonsense and able to speak exactly what is on her mind. With characteristics like these at such a young age, there is no doubt in our minds that she will do great things, especially within her community!

Why are you proud of your child? The start of this school year was not an easy one for Carrington, however, she maintained her grades, social life and managed her own business while adjusting to a new life. Carrington is the bravest 10-year-old I know. She doesn’t allow fear to stop her and stands firmly on her own faith. And for that alone we, and especially her father, will always be proud of her!
