Future Black History Makers: Meet Leetha Graham, a sixth-grader at John Griffin Middle

Leetha Graham, 11, daughter of Tamanda Khanga and Steven Graham, is in sixth grade at John Griffin Middle School.

She was nominated as a Fayetteville Observer Future Black History Maker because "Leetha is a remarkable young leader in the making," writes her nominator, Zakira C. Rich, Military Family & Youth Liaison-Student Services. "She excels in academics, the arts and sports. Leetha has been baking from scratch since the age of 4 and is currently working on a children's cookbook with one of her friends. Leetha has been a dancer with Elite Dance Center for seven years. She also sketches and designs clothing! Leetha is kind, caring and generous to her friends and is always helping others. In school, Leetha is an AIG student and maintains stellar grades while participating in orchestra, Science Olympiad and playing multiple sports. She plays soccer, basketball and softball. Leetha also loves to travel and learn about different cultures. She has been traveling since the age of 3 and has been to several states. Internationally, she has traveled to Mexico, Canada and Cyprus with plans to travel to Iceland in 2024. Her ultimate goal is to earn a scholarship to college and play softball and continue to travel and learn about other cultures and share the great things she learns."

What's your favorite subject in school? Science.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Professional softball player and a bakery owner.

Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do for fun? Bake and write about it; read about science; play softball; and collect Squishmallows.

What are you really good at doing? Keeping my grades up as an A or A/B honor roll student; baking from scratch; and hitting home runs.

What's your favorite thing about yourself? My sense of humor, and me being smart and loving the challenges life brings to me.

Who is your role model? My parents and my sisters.

If you could meet any famous person, who would it be and why? Zendaya, because she has made it very far as a woman of color, and I have always wanted to meet her.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I would go to Malawi because my mom is from there.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it? Time travel to learn about the people/family I was never able to meet and learn about history and also see what I can change about the future.

What's your favorite movie or TV show? "Colin in Black & White."

If you could eat one thing every day, what would it be? Pasta.

What her parents say

What makes your child a Future Black History Maker? Her desire for justice, ability to lead and ability to produce new, original ideas. She’s always thinking of how she can help others. She stands up for those who don’t have a voice.

Why are you proud of your child? She works hard, is very hands-on, she’s kind to others. No matter how hard the circumstances, she doesn’t go against her morals and values.
