The George RR Martin-produced series Dark Winds has been renewed for a second season.

The police procedural thriller has been picked up for more episodes by AMC following the conclusion of its second season earlier this month.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the US cable channel is aiming for a 2025 launch for the third season of Dark Winds since the ongoing strike action will make it impossible for work to commence any time soon.

Unlike many of the projects that Game of Thrones' Martin produces, Dark Winds is adapted from another author's works: Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn & Chee novel series.

The TV adaptation of Hillerman's books was more than 30 years in the making, with its gripping story of two Native American policemen, Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, cracking mysteries in Navajo Country. The series counts legendary actor Robert Redford as one of its producers alongside Martin.

AMC executive Dan McDermott said in a statement announcing Dark Winds' season three renewal: "We started this journey with very high hopes for this series, given the remarkable source material and extraordinary creative team behind it, and it has delivered on every level.

"From the beloved novels to an incredibly collaborative producing team that includes Robert Redford, George RR Martin, showrunner John Wirth and star Zahn McClarnon, to the entire cast and crew, there is so much storytelling yet to come in this universe. Thanks to the fans for embracing this series and the critics for celebrating and shining a light on it.”

The series features Marvel's Hawkeye and Echo star Zahn McClarnon and The Twilight Saga's Kiowa Gordon as the two police officers, alongside Tribal's Jessica Matten and The Office's Rainn Wilson. The second season featured a majority of Indigenous cast and crew.

Hillerman's books were originally published between 1970 and 2006. His daughter, Anne Hillerman, took over the series when Jim died in 2008.

In the UK, the first season of Dark Winds aired on Alibi.
