Future Hendersonville road projects: Drakes Creek roundabout, Rockland Road, traffic signals

Ready to hit the road?

Hendersonville has several longer range road projects that are in different stages of progress. They include:

Drakes Creek and Anderson Road in Hendersonville.

Drakes Creek Roundabout: To be built at the entrance of Durham Farms and the intersection of Avant Lane, Anderson Road and Countryside Drive to improve safety and resolve multiple “conflict points,” Hendersonville Public Works Director Sarah Lock said.  The project is entering the stage to acquire the needed right-of-way to launch construction. Hopes are work can start in the fall of 2023 and be complete around the fall of 2024.

Drakes Creek and Stop Thirty Roads: The intersection will be reconstructed at a higher elevation and the approaches will be widened to accommodate turn lanes. Land parcels will need to be acquired as the next step. Hopes are to start construction in the fall of 2023 with around 18 months estimated for completion.

Rockland Road: A widening project on the drawing board to add one lane to allow for left turns from both directions will likely need additional funding than what is appropriated by the city and Greater Nashville Regional Council. The target to start construction is 2030, Lock said. A grass strip and 10-foot multi-use path on the south side of Rockland Road for the length of the 1.3 mile project is also planned.

West Main, Old Shackle Island and Walton Ferry: The project to align an awkward intersection is still slowed over right-of-way needed from CSX Railroad.

CSX is working with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to potentially grant an easement for the realignment project, CSX spokesperson Sheriee Bowman has said.

Engineering and other right-of-way acquisition have gone forward, which includes the demolition of a former bank building and a small car dealership. A timetable for construction was still unclear.

Traffic signal synchronization

Bids are expected to go out soon for synchronization for traffic signals to include timing on three major city roadways – Indian Lake Boulevard, Main Street and New Shackle Island Road.

A new traffic signal is being installed on Center Point Road where eastbound cars exit from Vietnam Veterans Boulevard. The signal should be finished by the end of June.

Repaving projects

Hendersonville Mayor Jamie Clary wants the city to continue a trend of higher spending for repaving projects. About $3.4 million was dedicated to repaving in the fiscal year that ends June 30, which Clary said is the most spent.

Hendersonville added just over $517,000 late in the fiscal year to the repaving budget, which the city used for the following projects.

Rockland Road: From Imperial Boulevard to Freehill Road

Walnut Court: From Walnut Trace to the end

Walnut Trace: From Paradise Drive to Hickory Trail

East Drive: From Indian Lake Road/Cumberland Lake Hills to Trail East Drive/Indian Lake Road

Cedar Springs: From Dorcas Drive to the end

East Drive: From Trail East Drive to Cumberland Hills

Crooked Creek Court: From Wynbrooke Trace to the end

Winding Way Drive: From Alred Circle/Iris Drive to Pebble Creek Drive.
