FWC identifies man killed in airboat accident on St. Johns River

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating a deadly boating accident in Brevard County.

FWC responded to a call from a good Samaritan around 7 p.m. Tuesday reporting an empty airboat with the motor still running in shallow water on the St. Johns River just north of the Leroy Wright Recreation Area boat ramp.

The caller stayed with the airboat until FWC officers arrived.

A man believed to be the airboat operator was found dead underneath it.

FWC identified the victim Wednesday as Randall May, a 35-year-old man from Cocoa. He has been turned over to the medical examiner.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Mr. May,” FWC Northeast Regional Commander Maj. Jay Russell said in a statement. “We urge the public to please contact us anytime they see a need for assistance on the water.”

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
