On his Facebook page, the Cambodian leader said he had tested positive last night and that the test had been confirmed this morning.

Meanwhile, G20 is going to issue a statement at the end of the summit condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine, a senior US official said.

Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo said today that the world must not fall into another Cold War and that “it would be difficult for the world to move forward” unless the war ends.

Also, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky told the G20 that “now is the time when Russia’s war must and can be stopped” during his virtual address to world leaders.

Officials in China have expressed their displeasure at Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including Vladimir Putin’s non-disclosure of his plans to invade, and condemned the “irresponsibility” of suggested nuclear threats ahead of the G20 summit in Indonesia.

Mr Putin did not tell his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping “the truth”, reported the Financial Times citing a Chinese official, who said that the two leaders had hailed a “no limits” alliance between Moscow and Beijing when they met just 20 days before the Kremlin launched its invasion on Ukraine in February.

“If he had told us, we wouldn’t have been in such an awkward position,” the official said.

05:15 , Maroosha Muzaffar

President Joe Biden is set to cajole the world’s largest economies to further isolate Russia diplomatically and economically over its invasion of Ukraine despite a souring global outlook that has tested other nations’ resolve.

In meetings today at the Group of 20 summit in Indonesia, the US leader is to continue a global tour pressing nations to stand up to Russia and in defense of Ukraine’s sovereignty in both symbolic and substantive ways. The effort comes as global inflation and slowing economies have put new pressures on countries that imposed penalties on Russia for the nine-month war that has sent food and energy prices soaring.

Rishi Sunak extends support for Ukraine at G20

05:08 , Maroosha Muzaffar

British prime minister Rishi Sunak at the G20 summit today extended his support for Ukraine and confirmed a long-planned order for warships from BAE Systems, Reuters reported.

Mr Sunak said during his address: “Russia’s actions put all of us at risk. As we give the Ukrainian people the support they need, we are also harnessing the breadth and depth of UK expertise to protect ourselves and our allies.”

The UK prime minister also announced a $4.94bn contract to BAE Systems to build five ships for the Royal Navy, a government statement said.

Russian president Vladimir Putin’s regime would hear the chorus of global opposition to its actions, Mr Sunak said.

“One man has the power to change all of this. It is notable that Putin didn’t feel able to join us here. Maybe if he had, we could get on with sorting things out,” he added.

European Council president says Russia 'weaponised food', driving up poverty

04:32 , Maroosha Muzaffar

European Council president Charles Michel urged world leaders today to intensify pressure on Russia over its war against Ukraine, including Moscow’s biggest supporter China, it was reported.

He added that the summit this week was crucial to stopping Russia’s push “use food and energy as weapons”.

“Russia’s war impacts us all, no matter where we live, from Europe to Africa or the Middle East, and the single best way to end the acute crisis in food and energy is for Russia to end this senseless war and to respect the UN charter,” Mr Michel said.

“The Kremlin has decided to weaponise food, driving up hunger, poverty and instability.”

He added: “This is not a battle (of) Russia against the Western part of the world. It’s a battle for the U.N. charter. It’s a battle for international law. It’s a battle for the idea that this is not acceptable to try to change by force internationally recognised borders.”

UN chief urges G20 nations to adopt global stimulus package

Monday 14 November 2022 12:05 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has urged the G20 leaders gathered in Bali to adopt a proposed stimulus package to help the developing world with investments.

“The goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees is slipping away. We are dangerously close to tipping points at which climate chaos could become irreversible,” he said.

Mr Guterres added: “G20 countries are responsible for 80 per cent of global emissions”.“I, therefore, urge G20 economies to adopt an SDG stimulus package that will provide governments of the Global South with investments and liquidity, and offer debt relief and restructuring.

“This will enable emerging economies to invest in healthcare, education, gender equality and renewable energy. To invest in their people and rescue the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The SDG Stimulus is a minimal and necessary step to ease the food and energy crises and prevent further suffering and hardship down the line.

“G20 countries, as the world’s most powerful economies, with a majority on the boards of Multilateral Development Banks, can and must make it happen.”
