G7 leaders pledge to continue supporting Ukraine ‘for as long as it takes’

The leaders "reaffirm (their) unwavering support for Ukraine for as long as it takes to bring a comprehensive, just and lasting peace," the final communiqué reads in part.

In the statement, the G7 leaders emphasized that they are "more united than ever in our determination to meet the global challenges of this moment and set the course for a better future."

"We are taking concrete steps to support Ukraine for as long as it takes in the face of Russia's illegal war of aggression," the document reads.

The G7 leaders reiterated that they "condemn in the strongest possible terms the war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine, which constitutes a serious violation of international law."

"We issued the G7 Leaders' Statement on Ukraine, and with the clear intention and concrete actions set forth in it, we commit to intensifying our diplomatic, financial, humanitarian and military support for Ukraine, to increasing the costs to Russia and those supporting its war efforts."

The document also lists other achievements of the G7 Leaders' Summit, including strengthening efforts in the area of disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, transition to clean energy economies of the future, launching the Hiroshima Action Statement for Resilient Global Food Security, and allocating up to $600 billion to finance quality infrastructure through the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment.

The G7 Leaders' Summit started in the Japanese city of Hiroshima on May 19. On May 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew to Hiroshima to attend the summit.

The Ukrainian president has already held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

On May 21, Zelenskyy will take part in a "peace and stability" session with G7 leaders and invited non-G7 countries.

Earlier, Head of the President's Office Andriy Yermak announced that Zelenskyy was to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden during his visit to Hiroshima.

Zelenskyy also plans to hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
