Ga. high school band canceled holiday parade performance after online threats surfaced

A high school band pulled out of a parade performance Thursday night after deputies said someone was posting threats on social media.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department said the original social media post threatened to conduct a shooting at the Downtown Parade of Lights.

Officials said the post was shared across several social media platforms and more posts that made similar threats began to circulate.

Oglethorpe County Schools posted on Facebook that the Oglethorpe County High School Band and the auxiliary would not perform in the parade out of caution for the student’s safety.

Investigators said they did not identify any credible threat of violence that targeted the Parade of Lights of the downtown area during the event.

The investigation remains ongoing.
