Gadsden fireworks show Tuesday; bridge will be closed to let spectators watch from it

The annual Independence Day fireworks show over the Coosa River, presented by the Gadsden-Etowah Patriots Association and the City of Gadsden, is on tap for 9 p.m. Tuesday — but spectators need to be aware of some changes this year.

Those who’ve watched previous shows from the sidewalks on Memorial Bridge on Broad Street will have the bridge all to themselves: it will be closed from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to a city news release.

However, two other popular viewing spots for the thousands of spectators who turn out for the event will be off limits: the former Convention Hall property, where equipment work continues, and the Alabama Cancer Care construction site.

City officials suggested the parking lots at Mort Glosser Amphitheatre and the former YMCA of the Coosa Valley, Moragne Park, the Coosa River boardwalk and The Venue at Coosa Landing as good places to watch.

The city has contributed additional funding this year, according to the release, to help extend the display. A grant from the Alabama Department of Tourism, secured with the assistance of State Rep. Mack Butler, R-Rainbow City, helped with additional support.

“We want to invite all of Gadsden and Etowah County to celebrate our country's founding," Mayor Craig Ford said. “This year, citizens can enjoy a special view atop the Memorial Bridge on Broad Street, and we have partnered with ALDOT and others to clear out viewpoints along the Coosa River. Events like this are fun memories for the family and another reminder of the importance of a strong, connected community.”
