Gadsden municipal runoff race is Tuesday

It's been a long four weeks since Gadsden voters decided two City Council races and narrowed their choices for the remaining council positions and the mayor's race.

Tuesday, voters can finish the job by returning to the polls to cast their votes in the runoff race for mayor, and council districts 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The following candidates will be on the ballot. The mayor's races will be on all ballots; council races will be on the ballot in their respective districts.

Mayor: Craig Ford, Heather Brothers New

Council District 3: Larry J. Avery Jr., Denecia Ann Getaw

Council District 4: Kent Back (i), Carrie Machen

Council District 5: Billy Billingsley, Jason Wilson (i)

Council District 6: Dixie Minatra, Renay Stokes Reeves

Council District 7: Ben Reed (i), Chris Robinson

With provisional ballots added in, a total of 6.005 votes were cast and counted in the mayor's race on Aug. 23 — a very low turnout, given all the attention given to Gadsden city government in the last couple of years, and considering that Gadsden will be selecting its first new mayor in 16 years. Incumbent Sherman Guyton didn't seek reelection.

Often runoffs draw even fewer voters back to the polls; perhaps in this vote, with only two council races and two board of education races decided, and with six races still to be decided, that won't be the case.
