Gadsden State Cherokee to offer additional academic classes for fall semester

Gadsden State Cherokee will offer additional academic classes in the fall semester, according to a news release from the community college.

The new courses are U.S. History I; Human Growth and Development; Fundamentals of Oral Communication; Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II; Introduction to Business; Introduction to Humanities; Precalculus Algebra; and Nursing Concepts I.

Developmental courses — Elementary Algebra and Intermediate College Algebra — also will be available, according to the release.

Current academic offerings will continue: Poultry Production; Principles of Biology; General Microbiology; English Composition I; Advanced Evidence Clinical Reasoning; Orientation to College; and General Psychology.

“It is important that we increase accessibility to academic courses to the students in our area,” said Leslie Burton, Gadsden State Cherokee’s facilities director. “We want to be as convenient as possibly by offering courses closer to home.”

The new academic courses will be offered in both traditional and hybrid formats, according to the release, and will be open to dual enrollment students.

“The credits earned in these classes will go towards a student’s credential at Gadsden State or it will seamlessly transfer to a four-year university for students,” Burton said.

Students can complete the nursing program and the Poultry Science 2+2 Program with Auburn University at the Cherokee campus.

“Our nursing program has a great reputation for educating some of the best nurses in our area,” Burton said. “We are also proud of our unique partnership with Auburn University that allows students to attend Gadsden State their freshman and sophomore years studying poultry science, and their junior and senior years at Auburn.”

Students who complete the program will receive a bachelor’s degree in Poultry Science, and "will be prepared to work in one of the largest industries in Alabama,” Burton said.
