Galileo math teacher named Danville Public Schools Teacher of the Year

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — One Danville Public Schools (DPS) math teacher is bringing home the Teacher of the Year award.

Known for her relentless passion and commitment, on Feb. 1, school and district leaders announced Mathematics Teacher, Shirley “Michelle” Guzman as the 2025 Danville Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Guzman stepped foot into her career in teaching math at Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia. In 2021, she joined the DPS team at Westwood Middle School. There she served as a 7th Grade Team Leader and Gear Up VA Coordinator. By the next year, she started teaching at Galileo Magnet High School.

“Ms. Guzman devotes her time and energy to Galileo and does so selflessly,” said Galileo Principal Michelle Ramsey. “She is passionate about seeing Galileo soar and will do whatever it takes to help our students succeed while in school or after.”

At Galileo, Guzman takes on many roles including, the sponsor of the Progress Over Perfection (P.O.P.) Club, she is involved in the Rose Raised, a creative writing club, and is the coordinator of the after-school peer remediation tutoring program.

Teaching is not just a profession for me; it’s a passion and a calling. This recognition reinforces my belief in the power of education and them positive impact we can have on young minds. I am grateful to work in a community that values and supports education, and I look forward to continuing to inspire and guide my students on their educational journey,”

said Guzman.

Along with this accolade, Guzman will serve as the district’s nomination for the 2025 Mary V. Bicouvaris Virginia Teacher of the Year.

“Ms. Guzman’s dedication and commitment to her school and students is evident,” said DPS Superintendent Dr. Angela Hairston. “She is a fantastic teacher who works tirelessly to ensure the success of all students.”
