Galion Community Theater celebrates 40th anniversary with shows throughout the year

Galion Community Theater will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year with a few legendary performances.

The anniversary season includes two classic shows − the musical “The Sound of Music” to be performed at the end of June and “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the end of the year.

“The Sound of Music” was the first show performed at Galion Community Theater when it formed in 1984.

“And then we’ve got some fun cult classic, more corky, funny shows with 'Clue' here in February and then 'The Addams Family' coming up in the summer," said Board of Directors member Beth Anne Jarvis.

Rehearsals have started for “Clue: On Stage!” at the Galion Community Theater. The show will be performed at the end of February.

Galion Community Theater Youth Board production

“The Addams Family” is the result of the Galion Community Theater Youth Board work, and all the actors in the production are ages 10-20.

The Galion Community Theater Youth Board has eight-10 high school students, and looking to have 15 members to spread the importance of performing arts and being involved in the community.

“We are trying to create learning experiences for them where they learn more about being on stage, interacting with the volunteers and interacting with the public, and they will be out and about in the community playing on special events,” Jarvis said.

'Clue: On Stage!' coming in February

The theater typically does four live productions a year, said Jarvis, and it does two to three musicals and one or two plays. Comedy to “brighten people’s moods and brighten people’s spirits as we get through the darker months" is usually done in the winter.

Crystal Ebner, director for “Clue: On Stage!”, came up with this year's winter comedy production idea, as she had good family memories about watching the show.

“This play is based on a movie,” Jarvis said. “It’s a famous movie.”

She said rehearsals have begun and “the actors seem to be having a blast” sharing the journey through costuming and working on building the set paintings. The cast has about 15 actors.

“It’s all hands on deck,” Jarvis said. “The actors and the production crew, and all our volunteers are really excited to kick off our season strong.”

“Clue: On Stage"” will open Friday, Feb 16, with other dates of Feb. 17 and 23-25.

Tickets are $12 per person and will be available for theater members Monday. General admission tickets go on sale Monday, Feb. 5.

“People can call into the theater, or they can purchase their tickets online through our website,” said Jarvis.

Other performances coming this year

Other performances coming up this year will feature one of the founders of the Galion Community Theater and Lincoln Highway Bluegrass Band, and with that concert a dinner will be provided.

Movies at the Galion series will continue with the theater offering a free family movie once a month through the year. Free movie series was made possible with donations from businesses, Jarvis said.
