Gallo Center increases shows for Latino community in Modesto area. What’s still to come

It’s no secret that the Gallo Center for the Arts brings in a number of Latino performers each season.

What people may not know is that the venue’s efforts have increased so much over the years that the downtown Modesto center now is tops in the region for such shows, according to its chief executive officer.

“The Gallo Center now proudly presents more Latino programming than any other venue in the entire San Joaquin Valley,” CEO Chad Hilligus said in an email interview.

Regional Mexican music is in the midst of a massive surge in popularity, and Billboard magazine called it a movement, according to a story in The Fresno Bee.

Hilligus said the venue has shown a commitment over the years to present “broad and diverse programming that reflects the communities we serve. ‘Arts for All’ is woven into the fabric of who we are.”

And patrons have responded enthusiastically, with many performances selling out.

“Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias is always a standout. Ramon Ayala, Carla Morrison, Felipe Esparza, Lila Downs, just to name a few. All of these sold out well in advance with a wait list,” he said.

Johnny Garcia, president and CEO of the Stanislaus Latino Chamber of Commerce, said in an email interview that people have noticed the increase in shows.

“This growth reflects a deliberate commitment to actively listen to the voices of our diverse population, ensuring that the shows and concerts along with their services are inclusive and responsive to all of us,” he said.

Garcia said it’s good business but also the “commitment is evident in their show selections, which purposefully embrace and celebrate various cultures.”

He noted the center has been “conscientiously choosing performers and acts that resonate with their diverse audience. In doing so, they foster a sense of belonging and community, making the Gallo Center an inclusive and welcoming hub for all.”

Plenty of shows to come

There’s more to come for the current season, including some Hilligus looks forward to presenting.

“I’m particularly excited about a special double-bill with Latin Grammy-winning female power group Flor de Toloache with fellow Latin Grammy nominee Gina Chavez together on April 14 as part of my curated ‘Chad’s Picks’ series,” he said. “We also have Mariachi Sol de Mexico’s popular Christmas show back this season on Nov. 26, among several others.”

Some of the other shows remaining for 2023-24 season are:

Dec. 22: Nochebuena: A Christmas Spectacular

Jan. 27: Las Cafeteras

Feb. 26: Malevo

April 28: 123 Andres

May 7: The Villalobos Brothers & Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles

Hilligus receives plenty of input in booking the popular acts each season.

“I have several resources, not the least of which is a very active Latino Advisory Committee that we poll on a fairly regular basis,” Hilligus said. “I also have great relationships with agents who deal specifically with Latino artists and know the region well.”

He does not see the increase in Latin artists playing at large performance venues as merely a “trend” for the Gallo Center.

“I hope it’s a sign that we’re just listening to our audiences and making every effort to reach new ones.”
