A game with a lot of 'heart'

May 13—MONROEVILLE — To be good in sports, or in anything, you need to have a lot of heart.

Monroeville High School senior Brooklyn Schaffer was all about that Wednesday afternoon when she hosted a "Hit for the Heart" softball game as the Eagles entertained St. Paul in a Firelands Conference game at Clark Park.

Schaffer hosted the game — an 18-5 victory by the Eagles — as part of her spring project for her Teen Leadership Corps class.

Donations were taken, and there was a 50/50 raffle along with a basket auction and concession money to raise funds for the event.

"On Nov. 6, 2020, my brother (Dalton) went through open heart surgery," Schaffer said. "I am raising money to go toward children's medical expenses at the Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Heart Unit."

Dalton, a 2017 MHS graduate, is "all healed up and back to work," Brooklyn said.

Their sister, Alex, a 2015 MHS grad, hosted a similar event for her senior project.

"We are so thankful for his surgeons and doctors," Brooklyn said. "Many community members have had open heart surgery. I am so grateful for the amazing surgeons available."

Schaffer said it was a special day.

"It kind of means a lot to me," adding she got a lot of help from head softball coach Able Helmstetter and TLC adviser Rachal Paul.

Those who wish to donate can send a check made out to Monroeville Teen Leadership to Monroeville High School, 101 West St., Monroeville, Ohio 44847.
