Game recap: Jacksonville Jaguars rally from 17 down, beat Las Vegas Raiders to end slump

The Jacksonville Jaguars returned to TIAA Bank Field with a five-game losing streak, facing off against the Las Vegas Raiders to mark the midway point of the 2022 NFL season.

All five of the Jaguars' losses have been decided by a single score, including last week's defeat to the Denver Broncos in London, turning up the pressure on second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has struggled down the stretch of games. His completion percentage (55.3, compared to 65.2), interceptions thrown (three, compared to three combined for all other quarters) and yards per attempt (5.5, compared to 7.0) have all suffered in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders have their own issues, and struggled badly last week in a 24-0 loss at the New Orleans Saints. Still, Oakland's offense includes proven productive players in wide receiver Davante Adams and running back Josh Jacobs, and an experienced quarterback in Derek Carr. The Jaguars have never met the Raiders since their move to Las Vegas, and beat the Raiders 20-16 when the teams faced off in 2018 in Oakland.

The losing streak is gone.

4:08 p.m. | Jaguars stop Raiders, will clinch victory

Sacksonville did the job.

Darious Williams broke up a pass on first down, Andrew Wingard jarred a pass from Davante Adams on second down, Dawuane Smoot sacked Derek Carr on third down and Devin Lloyd grabbed the ball to end a chain of laterals on fourth down.

4:04 p.m. | Field goal: Riley Patterson converts kick, but Raiders still alive

Thanks to a penalty, the Jaguars weren't able to drain the clock. Travis Etienne ran to the 31, one yard short of the first down, but a holding penalty stopped the clock. Riley Patterson converted a 48-yard kick, but Las Vegas will have a minute to go.

Jaguars 27, Raiders 20, 1:03 4th.

3:55 p.m. | Raiders' drive goes nowhere: Jags take over on downs

The Jacksonville defense comes through.

Derek Carr missed on attempts for Davante Adams on second and third down, the former broken up by Tyson Campbell. Then Creekside High School graduate Darious Williams denied the fourth-down pass.

With 2:25 left and no Raider timeouts, the Jaguars need only one first down to snap their losing streak.

3:50 p.m. | Missed field goal ends Jaguars drive

A solid drive for Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars, chewing up the clock — until the finish.

A pass to Christian Kirk at the sidelines converted a third down at midfield, sandwiched by a pair of long runs from Travis Etienne. The second-year running back reached the 100-yard mark. But Las Vegas linebacker Blake Martinez stuffed Etienne on third and 1 at the Raider 24. Lawrence tried to draw the defense offside but Vegas didn't jump, so Riley Patterson arrived for a 41-yard field goal that went wide right. The Raiders are still alive with 3:03 remaining.

3:38 p.m. | Solid stop for Jaguars' defense

Las Vegas goes three and out. Andrew Wingard delivered a firm tackle on second down and an intense blitz on third down forced Derek Carr to unload the football in a hurry.

Just six and a half minutes to go, after an unexpected stoppage from a fan on the field.

3:32 p.m. | Las Vegas puts brakes on Jaguars drive

Trevor Lawrence converted one first down, sidestepping a potential safety to throw to Marvin Jones, but the Jacksonville drive broke down soon afterward.

After a Logan Cooke punt, the Raiders take over with 7:28 remaining in the fourth quarter. Can the Jaguars retain their 24-20 lead?

3:26 p.m. | Raiders punt from near midfield

Derek Carr directed a methodical Raiders drive that looked like succeeding for a while, including a clutch third-down pass to Foster Moreau. But Carr couldn't find Davante Adams in bounds on third down, and Las Vegas punted the ball away. Only about 10 minutes separate the Jaguars from an elusive win.

3:13 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Travis Etienne gives Jaguars lead

This is a superb response by Trevor Lawrence and the offense. A short toss to Luke Farrell here, a strike to Luke Farrell there, a line drive to Dan Arnold to advance the football inside the Las Vegas 30. Then Lawrence delivered a quick slant to Christian Kirk to convert third and 4 to break into the red zone.

Then, Travis Etienne — who had briefly limped off at one point during the drive — returned to run the ball into the end zone from 5 yards out. The Jags are in front for the first time today.

Jaguars 24, Raiders 20, 14:56 4th.

3:09 p.m. | End of third quarter: Raiders 20, Jaguars 17

That's the end of the third quarter. When play resumes, the Jags will have third and 1 from the Las Vegas 5.

2:59 p.m. | Jaguars nearly pick off Derek Carr

So close. Andre Cisco was all over that pass by Derek Carr, and the Jaguars' safety almost had it intercepted. If he had held on, that one could have gone back 60-plus yards to the end zone. Instead, the Raiders punted inside the Jacksonville 15.

2:50 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence to Christian Kirk pass opens half

Rally time? The Jaguars are showing signs of stepping up their comeback from a 17-0 hole.

Jamal Agnew's kickoff return set up the Jags in ideal field position, and Trevor Lawrence kept the momentum going, particularly with a sideline strike to a diving Christian Kirk. Then, Lawrence found the end zone on a 7-yard pass to Kirk.

Raiders 20, Jaguars 17, 10:15 3rd.

2:42 p.m. | Second half kicks off

That's a good start for the Jaguars: Jamal Agnew returns the second-half kickoff across midfield to start the Jags in prime field position.

2:29 p.m. | HALFTIME: Riley Patterson kicks Jaguars field goal as half expires

Not a bad two-minute drill at all there from Trevor Lawrence. The quarterback took off for a gain of 24 across midfield, then hit a few short passes to bring the ball steadily closer before the clock hit zero.

Riley Patterson converted the 44-yard field goal to cut the gap.

Raiders 20, Jaguars 10, halftime.

2:20 p.m. | Field goal: Daniel Carlson, Raiders extend lead

More Davante Adams. More Mack Hollins. More points for the Raiders.

After Derek Carr drove the Raiders down the field, rookie Jaguars linebacker Chad Muma broke up a third-down pass to the end zone. But Daniel Carlson connected on his second field goal from 38 yards.

Raiders 20, Jaguars 7, 0:45 2nd.

2:05 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Travis Etienne gets Jacksonville on board

Trevor Lawrence, on the move. The 2021 No. 1 draft pick has good speed for a QB and he showed it again on this drive, rounding the left side and sprinting across the Las Vegas 25 to convert a third-and-long play.

From there, Travis Etienne zipped down to the 1, then powered through the line into the end zone on first and goal. The ball popped out during that play, but officials ruled the ball had already broken the plane of the goal line.

Raiders 17, Jaguars 7, 4:50 2nd.

1:52 p.m. | Touchdown Raiders: Derek Carr, Davante Adams pile on

Looks like the Jaguars haven't learned their lesson about Davante Adams.

Derek Carr is still cruising. He connected with tight end Foster Moreau for a gain deep into Jacksonville territory and then found a wide-open — make that WIDE-OPEN — Adams in the secondary with nobody in his ZIP code. Safety Andre Cisco had fallen down on the play, and the result was a 38-yard touchdown. Adams is already up to 126 receiving yards.

Raiders 17, Jaguars 0, 10:51 2nd.

1:46 p.m. | Jaguars stall out again

Yep, it's a three-and-out. Raiders corner Rock Ya-Sin slammed Marvin Jones into the ground on first down, and Trevor Lawrence threw behind Evan Engram on third down. The Jacksonville offense remains stuck in neutral.

1:40 p.m. | Field goal Raiders: Las Vegas extends edge on Daniel Carlson kick

It's not just about Davante Adams. Hunter Renfrow and Mack Hollins contributed to the Raiders' passing game on that drive with excellent first-down grabs, and even though the Vegas drive ultimately stalled out inside the 30, they still picked up points.

Daniel Carlson was right on target for a 38-yard field goal, his 40th consecutive made field goal, and Las Vegas now leads the Jaguars by two scores.

Raiders 10, Jaguars 0, 14:08 2nd.

1:36 p.m. | END OF FIRST QUARTER: Raiders 7, Jaguars 0

Derek Carr and Davante Adams are picking the Jaguars apart early.

1:30 p.m. | Pitch doesn't work for Jaguars again

That's another three-and-out. The Jaguars tried a pitch on third-and-1 but Las Vegas defensive end Maxx Crosby wrapped up Travis Etienne for a loss of 4. Add another one to the list of Jaguars short-yardage failures this season.

After a Logan Cooke punt, the Raiders take over near midfield.

1:24 p.m. | Touchdown Raiders: Davante Adams strikes first

Davante Adams is dangerous. He already has six catches for 88 yards.

The Raiders' strategy is pretty clear: Get the ball to Adams a lot, whether that means pulling him into the backfield on screens or targeting the Pro Bowl wideout over the middle. Even a pair of holding penalties couldn't derail the drive. Adams converted fourth down on a pass from Derek Carr, and then executed a superb route to grab a 26-yard score over Tyson Campbell.

Raiders 7, Jaguars 0, 4:45 1st.

1:11 p.m. | Fumble: Pitch goes bad, Raiders recover

It all started so well for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence fired first-down strikes to Marvin Jones and Christian Kirk to advance to the Oakland 30. On third down, though, the Jags called a pitch to JaMycal Hasty and everything went wrong. Lawrence and Hasty couldn't make the connection and Vegas defensive end Maxx Crosby pounced on the loose ball. That's a fumble.

1:05 p.m. | Sacksonville: Dawuane Smoot sack stops Derek Carr on first drive

Good start for the Jaguars' D. That's a three-and-out: An off-target floating pass from Derek Carr, a pass to Josh Jacobs for a minimal gain and then a Dawuane Smoot sack of Carr on third down. The Jacksonville offense will go to work.

1 p.m. | Kickoff time: Jaguars win toss and defer

Football time. The Jaguars are in all teal today, and Las Vegas will get the football first.
