Sonic the Hedgehog is a character we've probably all wanted to kill at some point, from the infamous loading times of Sonic 06, the nightmare-inducing Ugly Sonic from the first movie trailer, the bug-ridden Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, etc.

Well, a recently released game featured just that. A game officially released by SEGA and all. Sure, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was a free game for April Fool's Day, and Sonic got better after everyone thought he had died, but it clearly struck a chord.

It was announced by Sonic's social media manager Katie Chrzanowski on Twitter that Murder had been downloaded by over 1 million people within five days, and is the 61st highest-rated game on Steam of all time (with SteamDB stating that 95.54% of user reviews are positive, tying with 2018's God of War).

If you've not played the game yet, it's a visual novel game with point-and-click elements, similar to the beloved Ace Attorney series, and can be beaten in about two hours.

The wider Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is on a bit of a roll right now. The two big-screen movies have been well-received by critics and fans alike, whilst last year's Sonic Frontiers was a bit more mixed on a critical level, but was praised for taking the games into an open-world setting, and sold well.

SEGA are also re-releasing last year's compilation Sonic Origins, as Sonic Origins Plus that features improved performance and adds Amy Rose as a character to the classic games, and bundles in a dozen Game Gear games in too.

Both Sonic the Hedgehog movies can be stream on Paramount+, while the second is also on NOW and Sky Go.
