This Year's Biggest Golden Globes Snubs, from ‘Bridgerton’ to ‘I May Destroy You’
The 2021 Golden Globes nominations arrived this morning and although we were excited for Netflix’s The Crown and Chadwick Boseman’s posthumous nod, there were quite a few big-name TV shows, movies and stars that got left off the list (ahem, Bridgerton?!). Here, a complete list of the biggest Golden Globes snubs of 2021.
1. Bridgerton
Somehow, critics forgot all about Bridgerton mania. How?! The Shonda Rhimes original didn’t receive one nomination. This snub comes as a major surprise considering the period drama is now their most-watched new series in Netflix history, with over 82 million households streaming it since its release.
2. Yuh-Jung Youn for Minari
When it comes to the Best Supporting Actress category, many (including us) were expecting to see Youn’s name for her role in Minari, which tells the story of a Korean American family that moves to Arkansas in pursuit of a new life and the American dream. However, we were happy to see that the flick at least made it on the list of noms for Best Foreign Picture.
3. The Midnight Sky
Sure it landed a nomination for Best Original Score, but we were almost positive this George Clooney flick (that he directed and starred in) would land at least two to three nominations.
4. Antony Starr (and almost everyone else) for The Boys
With the second season of the Amazon superhero series receiving a ton of praise from fans and critics this year, we were hoping to see at least one nod for the dark comedy. We’re not saying it needed to land a nomination for Best Drama Series, but we think Antony Starr’s portrayal of Homelander deserved some type of acknowledgment.
5. Issa Rae for Insecure
Season four of the popular comedy hit HBO this year and we were hoping it would get a little love from the Globes. Unfortunately, both the series and Rae herself were left out in the cold.
6. Meryl Streep for The Prom
With 32 nominations from the HFPA under her belt, we were surprised to see Streep’s name absent from this year’s list. Especially since her performance in two major motion pictures—The Prom and Steven Soderbergh’s Let Them All Talk—received rave reviews. And did we mention, her The Prom co-star, James Corden, landed a nomination for his role? Interesting...
7. Jurnee Smollett & Jonathan Majors for Lovecraft Country
The HBO series did manage to break into the Globes nods for Best Drama Series, however, the entire cast was snubbed. Not one lead (or supporting) actor/actress were mentioned during the nomination announcements. And as serious fans of the show, this one hit hard.
8. Da 5 Bloods
While the Trial of the Chicago 7 and Nomadland managed to get the recognition they deserved, Spike Lee’s film, Da 5 Bloods, was not so lucky. In fact, it was completely shut out by the HFPA. This might be awkward considering Lee's kids are ambassadors for this year’s event.
9. I May Destroy You
After all the excitement surrounding the HBO series, the HFPA overlooked it when it came to nomination time. And the internet was not happy, to say the least. One Twitter user wrote, “Did The Golden Globes really snub I May Destroy You while nominating Emily in Damn Paris? Now I know good and well...”
So who will actually win when the Golden Globes air on Sunday, February 28? We’ll have to wait and see.
