DEMING - A weapons designer and safety consultant for "Game of Thrones" was in New Mexico on Wednesday to talk to students about potential careers in film.

Natalia Lee, aka the "Woman of Weapons," is a television and film armorer, which means she's responsible for the safety of cast and crew when weapons are used. In addition to being the armorer for "Game of Thrones," Lee also acted in the HBO hit show and created weapons for the fantasy epic.

Lee led a symposium to inform Deming Early College High School students of film career possibilities in New Mexico.

“I immigrated to Australia from Poland when I was 6 years old and worked my way up from the bottom of the film industry,” Lee said in a news release. “I came to Deming because this community reminds me of where I came from. There is so much opportunity for these kids to build a strong economic base through film work.”

Lee not only designed the iconic Heartsbane Sword for "Game of Thrones," she played Chella, a grizzly character in the show's early seasons.

Highlighting her presentation was a staged fight scene.

"The kids are our future." Lee told the students. "We want Hollywood to be more diverse … we want everybody. So if you have a 'disadvantage' we want to turn that into an advantage."

The Deming ECHS students also heard from Iman Shervington, a director and screenwriter who has created over 50 short films and public service addresses, a feature-length documentary, two feature-length films and a podcast.

“With the expansion of Netflix into the Albuquerque Studio and development of 828 Studio and the Creative Campus in Las Cruces, our students have a real chance of pursuing a film industry career and we want them to hear about it first-hand” said Bryan Simpson, principal of ECHS, in a news release.
