Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke has suggested that the prequel spin-off currently in development at HBO is coming too soon.

The star, who played Daenerys Targaryen for eight seasons, commented in an interview with The New Yorker that in an ideal world, HBO would let the franchise "lie for a minute before doing anything else" following the main show's series finale on Sunday (May 19).

The pilot for the spin-off – which features Naomi Watts and John Simm and reportedly began filming earlier this month – comes from Jane Goldman.

"I think that maybe let it be for a minute, before getting on that so quickly," Clarke said.

When asked to elaborate, she explained: "I just think that it would be lovely to just let this lie for a minute before doing anything else.

"But then it'll be something completely different, and it won't be Game of Thrones. It won't be called Game of Thrones. It will be inspired by Game of Thrones characters, a fantastical series, set in a similar time.

"I can't speak because I don't know the script. But I would just like a bit more time between Game of Thrones being cold in the ground before something else comes along. Because isn't everyone already up to their eyeballs with Game of Thrones?"

Clarke then acknowledged that her perspective is a little different, having played Daenerys since the start of this decade.

"I'm of the mindset of, like, 'Leave while the party's still going', because then you're going to leave with some good memories," she said. "But you're talking to somebody who's been living in this character for ten years, so I'm like, 'What other story is there to tell?'

"I know that there's lots of people saying that they wish that the episodes were longer, and that they wish there were more of this season, which I totally respect."

In the same interview, Clarke revealed what she would like changed if the final season were to be hypothetically remade.

The series finale for Game of Thrones saw Daenerys killed by Jon Snow (Kit Harington). Meanwhile, Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) was named the new ruler of Westeros, and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) becomes Queen in the North.
