Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has shared an update on the show's various spinoffs, confirming that three animated shows are currently in the works.

The hit HBO fantasy came to an end in 2019, though has already produced one major spinoff in the form of House of the Dragon, while other shows such as The Hedge Knight are on the horizon.

Taking to his blog, Martin revealed that they are close to taking "the next step" with a few potential animated shows – which include Nine Voyages, the previously-announced live-action series set to focus on Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint).

While praising Netflix's animated show Blue Eye Samurai, Martin wrote: "As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A Song of Ice & Fire.

"None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them.

"When this last round of development started a few years back, we had four ideas for animated shows, with some great talents attached.

"Writers rooms and summits, outline and scripts followed in due course… but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved."

The author went on to confirm: "Work on the other two animated projects continues apace, however…and meanwhile, we have moved Nine Voyages, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation. A move I support fully."

Martin explained that "budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive", especially with the constant change of locations each week as Velaryon adventures around Essos.

"There’s a whole world out there," he continued. "And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway."

The writer concluded: "Will any of them make it to air? happen? No way to know. Nothing is certain in Hollywood. But if it does happen, with one or two or all three shows, I hope we can make them as good as gorgeous and gripping as Blue Eye Samurai. We will for damn sure try."

The next Song of Ice and Fire-centric project in the pipeline is House of the Dragon season two, which is due to premiere this summer.

House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Season 2 has been confirmed and is due to air in 2024. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
