The first season of TBS's adaptation of Snowpiercer hasn't even premiered yet, but the drama has already lined up a big casting for season 2.

Game of Thrones star Sean Bean will be joining the series as a new regular in the show's second season, which is currently in production, according to Deadline.

Details of his character are being kept under wraps for now, but we'd expect to see him share scenes with the likes of Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs, who are heading up the new TV series.

As well as roles in the Lord of the Rings movies and the recent BBC series World on Fire, Bean is probably best known for playing Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, with the character's untimely death becoming the stuff of TV twist legends.

But while Bean may now be known for his on-screen deaths, the actor recently told Digital Spy that he's started turning down the roles that would see his character killed off.

"I found it rather more interesting to play someone who is fractured and slightly broken by his experiences and trying to put on a front for his children and try and hold the family together," Bean explained of his World on Fire character.

Snowpiercer is based on the acclaimed 2013 Chris Evans movie and takes place on a train that is carrying the survivors of the human race seven years after an apocalypse.

Audiences got their first look at the new series back in July in three photos of the train's upper and lower class divides, with Jennifer Connelly's character Melanie Cavill in the centre of it all.

Speaking about the new show to Digital Spy, actor Benjamin Charles Watson promised something "darker and grittier" than the original film.

"It's pretty similar. It's just going to be a bit darker and grittier," he said. "You can tell it's such a different TV show, but compared to the movie, it's going to be pretty darn similar.

"The movie is violent, a little bit for television. It's TBS, so they can't make it that violent. But it's going to be a whirlwind. A lot of people are going to really enjoy it."

Snowpiercer is expected to air in spring 2020 on TBS.
