Oct. 22—MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota's Mason Nevers scored an extra-attacker goal with 1:24 to go in the third period to tie the game, then Matthew Knies scored 21 seconds into overtime to give the Gophers a 3-2 win in the series opener.
First star: Matthew Knies, UM, game-winning goal.
Second period: Drew DeRidder, UND, 35 saves.
Third period: Mason Nevers, UM, game-tying goal.
UND 1, Minnesota 0 — Jake Schmaltz (Ty Farmer) 4:23. UND gets on the board first as Farmer gets the puck at the point and throws it toward the top of the crease, where Schmaltz tips it past Justen Close for his second goal of the season.
Second period
UND 1, Minnesota 1 — Jackson LaCombe (Ryan Johnson, Matthew Knies) 18:37. Minnesota gets on the board when LaCombe gets a puck at the top of the zone, puts it on his backhand, wheels around the right circle to get separation from Mark Senden and flips a backhand just inside the post.

UND 2, Minnesota 1 — Riese Gaber (Chris Jandric, Jake Schmaltz) 19:24 (pp). UND answers on its first power play of the night. Gaber gets the puck in the right circle and does his thing, wiring a puck between defenders and just inside the post for his fourth goal of the season.

Third period
UND 2, Minnesota 2 — Mason Nevers (Mike Koster, Jimmy Snuggerud) 18:36 (ex). Minnesota pulls the goalie for the extra attacker. Nevers comes off the bench, heads to the slot and snaps a shot past DeRidder to tie it.

Overtime
Minnesota 3, UND 2 — Matthew Knies :21. Minnesota wins the opening draw and scores off the draw. Knies finishes it when he walks UND defenseman Chris Jandric in the right circle and makes a power move to the net and slams it five-hole on DeRidder.
