Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Democrats are calling for a non-partisan redistricting committee to redraw voting maps. Ten states currently have commissions with the primary responsibility of drawing congressional maps, and in the past Republicans and Democrats have spoken in favor of the idea. Trial court judges that are overseeing the redraw have expressed plans to appoint an expert to help advise them as the new maps are created. (FOX8)

  2. Wednesday afternoon, the city's 2021 Gang Assessment Report was presented in hopes of revising crime reduction and intervention strategies. Experts suggest that the response to crime in the last two years has been significantly altered due to COVID-19 and pandemic-related staffing shortages. City leaders hope to use the information gathered to help make all Durham citizens feel safer in their day-to-day lives. (abc11)

  3. Last month the Durham City-County Planning Department approved a site plan for a proposal to build a 379 single-family home and townhome community near West Point on the Eno Park and Eno River. The plan was allowed to proceed without input from the city council or public and opponents of the project filed an appeal to that decision. Elon law professor among other advocates are fighting to prevent overdevelopment on the Eno. (INDY Week)

  4. A Durham couple is sharing their ordeal to regain control of their mail, after someone hijacked their mail delivery. The couple noticed receiving reduced mail and came to discover that the USPS had received a change of address form. After trying to amend the issue, it took two months for the post office to stop forwarding their mail. (WRAL)

  5. The Durham and Redwood Fire Departments were called to a home fire on Lodestone Drive around 8:30 am on Wednesday. The crews were able to get the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. The family's dog was rescued uninjured. The home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage from the accidental electrical blaze that began in the attic.(CBS17)
