The BBC have shared first images of an upcoming suspense drama starring Gangs of London’s Joe Cole.

Nightsleeper is a real-time thriller following the hacking of a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London, and will arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early 2024.

"Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain overnight service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?" the synopsis reads.

Written by BAFTA award-winning Nick Leather, Nightsleeper stars Cole as off-duty cop Joe Roag, who happens to be onboard the train. He appears alongside The Light in the Hall’s Alexandra Roach, who plays Abby Aysgarth, a director at the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, who receives a phone call to say that the UK railway network is under attack.

In the six-part series which takes place over six hours, the pair must work together to stop the train from reaching the end of the line.

The series was first announced back in April, alongside its main stars, but now new photos of Roach and Cole have been released, giving a sense of the tense action involved in the show.

Nightsleeper’s all-star cast also includes Cole’s fellow Gangs of London star Parth Thakerer, Years and Years’ Ruth Madeley, Harry Potter’s Katie Leung, Jerk’s Sharon Rooney, The Bay’s Sharon Small and Vigil’s Lois Chimimba.

Upon the announcement earlier in the year, Leather said: "It’s a joy to be able to write for this cast of some of the finest acting talent in the UK today – our train is a real rollercoaster, a white-knuckle trip through the heart of Britain, and I’m delighted to have them join us for the ride."

Nightsleeper will air next year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
