Garden City High School evacuated due to bomb hoax

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) – Garden City High School was evacuated due to a bomb threat Tuesday afternoon, according to Garden City Public Schools.

“Around 12:40 p.m., Garden City High School received a phone call from an unknown individual indicating there was a bomb inside the school. Out of an abundance of caution, all students and staff were immediately evacuated, and law enforcement was notified,” said Errin Reyes, a spokesperson for the Garden City Police Department, in a news release Tuesday evening.

Reyes says students were moved to a nearby church and to the area near the football and soccer fields.

“After a thorough investigation by law enforcement, no threats to the students, staff, or school were discovered, and Garden City High School was released at its normal dismissal time. The scene was cleared around 3:30 p.m., and no explosives were located,” continued Reyes in the news release.

According to Garden City Public Schools’ website, the last class of the day dismisses at 3:20 p.m.

“We encourage parents to remind your child to immediately report information about any school safety-related incident(s) to administrators/staff and/or the Garden City Police Department,” concluded Reyes in the news release.

The Garden City Police Department was assisted by the Finney County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Finney County Emergency Management, Garden City Fire Department, and Finney County Emergency Medical Services.

The investigation is ongoing.
