Gardner-Webb University recently held a ceremony to recognize Student Academic Achievements, Leadership, Service, and Volunteerism. Winners of these awards exemplify the university’s core values of faith, service and leadership in their classrooms and communities.

In recognition of the award presentation, each student may choose one book for purchase by Gardner-Webb’s Dover Memorial Library. The book will be inscribed with the student’s name and the date of the award presentation.

Following are the winners from Cleveland County:

Boiling Springs

  • Matthew Steven Barger, who received a Master of Divinity degree, is one of the winners of the Daniel E. Goodman Review & Expositor Award given in memory of Daniel Goodman, former professor of New Testament, who passed away in January 2009. Presented to students who have excelled academically in their studies at the School of Divinity. Award recipients receive a one-year subscription to the academic journal, Review & Expositor.

  • Marina Bradic was presented the Criminal Justice Administration Academic Leadership Award.

  • Elin Wera Linnea Hellberg is the winner of the Dr. A Frank Bonner Master of Business Administration Academic Excellence Award.

  • Maria Roriz Jardim, who received a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, won the Finance Award.

Kings Mountain

  • Hannah Carolyn Ray, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Magna Cum Laude, earned the Charles and Sybil Shelton award presented to a senior who has provided outstanding servant leadership through opportunities offered by the Office of Christian Life and Service. Presented in memory of Charles and in honor of Sybil, this award recognizes Charles’ volunteer mission service and leadership of several mission trips for GWU students.

Mooresboro

  • Amanda Scruggs McBrayer, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree, earned the TA to Teacher Program Grit Award.

Shelby

  • Katie Canipe, received the Professor James Rash Award, given to the student who exhibits outstanding creativity, productivity, craftsmanship and presentation in the areas of ceramics, art appreciation, drawing and painting.

  • Mariah Case Hamby is one of the winners of the Daniel E. Goodman Review & Expositor Awards given in memory of Daniel Goodman, former professor of New Testament, who passed away in January 2009.   • Thomas Manning, received a Bachelor of Arts, Cum Laude, and was recognized with the Outstanding Male Graduate Award, which is nominated and voted on by the faculty.

  • Mary Elysabeth Thompson, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Cum Laude, was winner of the Excellence in Technical Theatre award.

  • Micah Zehnder won the Art History Research Award, which is a monetary award presented to the student whose research results in a well-written paper that clearly presents an original idea in the field of art history.

  • Matthew Waller is the winner of the Gerald and Sharon Keown Annual Hebrew Award given to the student who demonstrates mastery of Hebrew at the level the student has taken. The award includes a gift to encourage and assist the student in continued engagement with biblical Hebrew. The award is named in memory of Dr. Gerald Keown, Professor of Old Testament Interpretation from 1996 to his retirement in 2019, and his beloved wife Sharon.

  • Erin White was the winner of the Gil Blackburn Excellence in Western Civilization Award, named for Blackburn, who served as professor of History and vice president and dean of Academic Affairs from 1968-2004. This award is given to an outstanding freshman or sophomore student in the Western Civilization courses.
