We’ve seen clown contouring, henna contouring and even neck contouring, but just when you thought beauty had reached peak contour, a designer at London fashion week raises the bar once again by creating a look probably best described as ‘horror’ contouring.

Models strutting their stuff during the Gareth Pugh show at London Fashion Week sported super defined cheekbones and hyper-plumped top lips in an illusion that was created using stretched pieces of elastic held in place above their ears. Esteemed make-up artist, Val Garland was responsible for the look that was part horrific, part oddly beautiful.

“If Joan Crawford was Hannibal Lecter’s mistress,” was how she described the look backstage at London’s Freemasons Hall.

That’s one use for an old pair of tights! Extreme cheekbones at Gareth Pugh [Photos: Rex Features]

It’s not the first time the fashion designer has used elastic in one of his shows, in September he brought us models wearing painted tights over their heads, as part of his homage to Soho. This time in a clever twist Val used elastic from a pair of American Tan tights stretched under the cheekbones to make the cheeks look like they were ‘pumped full of filler’. The effect also lifted the top lip so that it looked a lot fuller. Who needs fillers when there’s an old pair of tights lying around?

Describing the look as ‘painfully gorgeous’, Val explained that it was a natural step down from the out-there looks we’re used to with Gareth Pugh.

“What I could do [this season] wasn’t extreme but it was beautiful. And as close as you can get to natural at Gareth Pugh,” she said.

Glamour gets gruesome. Models sported Hannibal Lecter type masks [Photos: Rex Features]

But extreme contouring wasn’t the only nod to the ‘horror’ genre as models not sporting the tights-enabled cheekbones took to the catwalk in full on ‘Hannibal Lecter’ style masks.

In a creepy meets creative look, the masks were teamed with structured power dresses and 40s style up dos. Sort of glamour meets gruesome. It’s certainly not a look for the faint hearted, but for a designer who’s previously used rocky horror and a picture of Wayne Rooney as his beauty inspiration, this particular show was positively paired down.
