Garrett Clayton's 'Barbie Boys' Music Video Is a Bright Ode to Pop Culture

It's time to get down with the "Barbie Boys."
Just in time for the release of Barbie, Garrett Clayton released a new music video paying homage to the pink-drenched blockbuster — as well as other moments from pop culture tied to Southern California.
In the video, the gay star of King Cobra and Hairspray Live! is seen steering a pink convertible — and also dancing in white on a pier in a nod to the iconic "Sometimes" by Britney Spears, which was filmed at Paradise Cove in Malibu.
Additionally, sequences with '80s workout attire are modeled after Olivia Newton-John's "Physical," portions of which were also recorded in Malibu.
Clayton's "Barbie Boys," which dropped Friday evening, celebrates the cultural influence of the California beach city as well as the male fanbase of Barbie. The film, inspired by the popular Mattel doll, celebrated a record-setting $155 million opening weekend. And the fan base isn't just women; men accounted for around one-third of the audience, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Out's new cover story is also dedicated to Barbie and its queer fanbase. It showcases the LGBTQ+ talent represented onscreen, among them Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, and Scott Evans.
