Garrison leads Wapello in Class 1A boys state golf meet's first round

Cooper Garrison carded a 91 to lead Wapello in the first round of the Class 1A state boys golf tournament at Ames Golf and Country Club Monday.

Garrison was in a five-way tie for 17th place individually, The final round is scheduled for Tuesday.

Bennett Berger of Lake Mills is the individual leader with a 5-over par 76. Lake Mills is the team leader at 351 and is followed by Akron-Westfield (352), East Buchanan (359), North Butler (367), English Valleys/North English (374), Gilbertville Don Bosco (376), Fremont-Mills (382) and Wapello (385).

Rounding out Wapello's team score were Casey Short (94), Codder Malcolm (100) and Zach Harbison (100). Also playing for Wapello were Matthew McGowan (103) and Dawson Tipps (106).

BOYS SOCCER

FORT MADISON 4, WASHINGTON 0: Mitchell Pothitakis had two goals and an assist as the Bloodhounds blanked Washington a Class 2A, Region 6 semifinal at Fort Madison's Baxter Sports Complex.

Fort Madison (14-5) plays Pella (16-2) at Pella Wednesday for the regional championship. That winner advances to next week's state tournament.

Leif Boeding and Henry Graham each scored a goal. Nathan Bowen had two assists and Graham had one. Reiburn Turnbull picked up the shutout with four saves.

COLUMBUS/W-MU 1, MEDIAPOLIS 0: An overtime goal by Oscar Acalå lifted Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union to a Class 1A, Region 5 semifinal victory over the Bulldogs at Mediapolis.

Columbus/W-MU (12-5) advances to Wednesday's 6:30 p.m championship match against Notre Dame-West Burlington (16-3) at Notre Dame's Tackleson Field. That winner advances to next week's state tournament.

Notre Dame-West Burlington advanced with a 10-0 win over Albia.

PREP SOFTBALL

WEST CENTRAL 7, NORTH FULTON 3: The Heat broke a 3-3 deadlock with four runs in the sixth inning and ousted North Fulton in the Illinois Class 1A regional championship game at Stronghurst, Illlinois.

It was the first time West Central won a regional title on its home field. The Heat (26-6) plays Newman Central Catholic (13-8) of Sterling at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the sectional semifinals at Williamsfield. Peru St. Bede (17-3) faces Woodhull AlWood (23-5) at 6:30 Tuesday in the other semifinal.

Tuesday's winners face off Friday at Williamsfield for the sectional championship.

Monday, Brynna Seitz, Addie Seitz and Shelby Bowman each had two hits for West Central. Addie Seitz and Bowman each doubled and Addie Seitz had two RBIs and was also the winning pitcher. She surrendered three runs, just one earned, on five hits and two walks in seven innings. She struck out nine.

Allyson Harrold hit a solo homer for North Fulton and Cali Hanson doubled. Harrold was the losing pitcher, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and a walk in six innings. She struck out four.

NO. 5 WB-ND 11, NEW LONDON 1: Elise Oleson accumulated a double, two singles, two runs scored and three RBIs in four trips to the plate to lead fifth-ranked (Class 3A) West Burlington-Notre Dame to a season-opening win at Barb Carter Field.

The Falcons' Lauren Krieger had two doubles, four RBIs and two runs in three trips. Lyndsey Kelley hit a home run and Lauren Summers doubled. Summers was the winning pitcher, giving up one earned run on two hits and no walks while striking out 12 in five innings.

Elly Manning and Ashlyn McSorley each singled for New London. Megan Lee was the losing pitcher.

NO. 12 L-M 5, WAPELLO 4: Jersey Lessenger and Piper Brant both went 3-for-4 to lead No. 12 (Class 2A) Louisa-Muscatine over the Arrows in a North Division game at Wapello.

Lessenger hit two doubles and her teammates McKenna Hohenadel and Hannah Kissell each had one double. Brant had three RBIs and was the winning pitcher.

Serah Shafer had two of Wapello's three hits, including a double. Ada Boysen was the losing pitcher.

CARDINAL 8, DANVILLE 0: The Comets scored five runs in the first inning en route to a South Division win at Eldon.

Carlea Beckman went 2-for-3 to lead Danville at the plate. Kylie Palmer and Makenzie Morris both singled for the Bears. Ava Smith was the losing pitcher.

CENTRAL LEE 5, FORT MADISON 1: The Lady Hawks scored a non-conference win at Fort Madison.

Meghan Hopp tripled for Central Lee and Abby Simmons hit a double.

FAIRFIELD 5, VAN BUREN COUNTY 0: The Trojans blanked Van Buren County at Fairfield.

Peyton McCabe banged out three hits for Fairfield.

COLUMBUS 9, HILLCREST 3: The Wildcats coasted past Hillcrest Academy in a North Division game at Columbus Junction.

MEDIAPOLIS 18, PEKIN 6: The Bullettes cruised to a North Division win at Packwood.

W-MU 6, LONE TREE 5: Winfield-Mount Union trimmed Lone Tree in a North Division game at Winfield.

PREP BASEBALL

NOTRE DAME 4, VAN BUREN COUNTY 2: The Nikes opened their season with a South Division win at Keosauqua.

Carson Chiprez and Owen Gulick each had two hits for Notre Dame. Chiprez had an RBI and two stolen bases. Gulick had an RBI and one stolen base. Caden Schwenker pitched two innings for the win. He gave up two runs on two hits and struck out three.

Bailey Roen and Maddix Kite both went 2-for-3 for Van Buren County. Jackson Manning was the losing pitcher.

NEW LONDON 15, WEST BURLINGTON 1: Three New London pitchers combined on a one-hitter and the Tigers rolled to a South Division win at West Burlington.

Winning pitcher Dereck Santiago gave up one run on one hit and two walks in three innings, striking out five. Brenden Richey and Kooper Schulte each relieved for an inning and neither surrendered a run, a hit or a walk. Schulte struck out three and Richey fanned one.

New London had just six hits, but coaxed nine walks from four West Burlington pitchers. Santiago homered for the Tigers.

West Burlington's Hayden Vandenburg spoiled the no-hit bid with an RBI-double in the third inning.

CARDINAL 5, DANVILLE 0: The Comets scored all their runs in the first two innings in a South Division win at Eldon.

Danville was limited to two hits, singles by Jaden Bauer and Sawyer Nelson. Nelson was the losing pitcher, giving up all five runs, just one earned, on one hit and five walks in two innings. He struck out two. Hayden Logan pitched the final four innings for Danville, allowing no runs on two hits and four walks. He struck out eight.

MEDIAPOLIS 5, PEKIN 3: Kamden Stotlar went 3-for-4 and Lance Ludens homered to lead the Bulldogs past Pekin in a North Division game at Packwood.

Jaxon Brooks doubled for Mediapolis. Grant Hilton had two RBIs. Brooks was the winning pitcher. He gave up one earned run on two hits and no walks in 2 2/3 innings. He fanned seven Panthers.

FORT MADISON 6, CENTRAL LEE 4: The Bloodhounds topped Central Lee in a non-conference game at Fort Madison.
