Gas prices in Florida are higher after the flood and the shortage. Here’s how much

After a week of flood-induced gas shortages, South Florida is feeling more pain at the pump with higher prices.

While gas station lines subsided over the weekend and supply is getting back to normal, the cost per gallon jumped this week by an average of 9 cents a gallon in the Miami area, according to a survey by fuel-monitoring service GasBuddy.

Gas prices also increased across the state from last week, according to AAA. But the auto club says the national average dipped by about a penny per gallon.

What the experts are saying

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy: “Typically, gas prices peak between May and June, and with the oil market showing significant cracks in strength, we may have seen the peak in the national average already occur, a few weeks earlier than average. While it’s possible we could go higher later this summer should a major hurricane target sensitive infrastructure, it appears the odds that the national average will miss the $4 per gallon mark are rising. It’s certainly looking optimistic for motorists.”
