BRIGHTON — A gas leak in downtown Wednesday morning forced businesses to evacuate buildings briefly, but people were allowed to return to the area within a half hour.

The area evacuated included Main Street to North Street and Grand River Avenue to East Street.

Brighton Fire Chief Mike Evans said a private company was installing a new utility pole when they struck the gas line. Consumers Energy turned off the gas and the line was repaired.

Evans said none of the buildings had a high level of gas.

"The evacuation was all precautionary," he said.

Tracy Wimmer from Consumers Energy said the company received the gas leak report at 9:53 a.m., had someone on site by 10:01 a.m. and the gas was off by 10:11 a.m.

"No one was injured or in danger," Wimmer said.

Police Deputy Chief Craig Flood said the areas that were closed and evacuated might change as officials learn more about what's going on, and within a short time the evacuation was lifted.

"It's mitigated," Brighton Deputy Police Chief Craig Flood said. "I think they still have some time to actually repair it, but they stopped the leak."

Brighton Area Fire has blocked off East Street as they investigate a gas leak in the block from Grand River to East North Street and from Main to South East Street Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022.
