Gas pipeline rupture shuts down Highway 9 in Phillips County

GLADE, Kan. (KSNW) — A gas pipeline rupture and fire temporarily shut down Kansas Highway 9 in Phillips County.

Tallgrass says local emergency officials notified their team that lightning had caused a small grass fire in Phillips County near their TIGT Natural Gas Pipeline.

“We have isolated a section of the pipeline, and our operations team has commenced activities to safely restore the pipeline to service,” said Tallgrass. “At this point, we don’t expect any broader impacts to natural gas service in the area.”

It happened shortly after 3 p.m. Monday near East 600 Road. The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office says the highway between Glade and Kirwin was closed until the fire got under control and the rupture closed.

The area has since been secured, and traffic on Highway 9 has been rerouted.

Residents of Glade and Kirwin may also be without gas service for up to eight hours, according to the sheriff’s office.

The area of the fire and rupture is just northwest of the Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge.

There are no reports of any injuries.
