Gas prices continue to trickle down as the holiday approaches.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) said in a weekly report that Georgia drivers are now paying an average price of $2.88 per gallon for regular gas.

Monday’s state average is eight cents less than a week ago and AAA said drivers are now paying almost $5.00 less to fill-up at the pump compared to last month.

“Georgia pump prices are dropping sharply, which is a welcome relief to Georgians who plan to hit the road for the holidays,” said Montrae Waiters, AAA-The Auto Club Group spokeswoman.

Last week, Governor Brian Kemp and other elected officials voted for another extension on the gas tax suspension. Waiters said that contributes to part of the reason for the price drops.

“There are several factors contributing to the decline in gas prices, Governor Kemp’s decision to extend the suspension of the state gas taxes through January 10th, globally crude oil prices continue to drop, and winter blend gasoline is cheaper to produce. Still, experts in the industry cannot predict if gas prices will continue to fall after the new year.”

The most expensive Georgia metro market is Atlanta with an average gas price of $2.93. The least expensive Georgia metro market is Warner Robins with an average of $2.68.

The last record high for the average price of regular gas in Georgia was June of this year at $4.49.

Since last Monday, the national average for a gallon of regular gas has gone by 14 cents to $3.27. AAA said the increasing supply and lower gas demand is causing the gas prices to trickle down. As the demand remains low, drivers will likely continue to see gas prices go down through next week.
