Gas prices in Delaware have fallen in recent weeks; national prices are higher. Here's why

If you recently filled your tank up, you might have been surprised to see lower prices than what you’ve gotten used to, but don’t hold your breath for a bounty of savings anytime soon.

While fewer drivers have been visiting the pump in recent weeks, causing demand to decrease, the national average for a gallon of gas hasn’t seen much of a difference.

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the national average price for a gallon of gas fell to $3.79, only 4 cents different from last week’s national average of $3.83. A year ago, the price at the pump was $3.79, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Why are gas prices slowly falling?

On Oct. 3, the national average price for a gallon of gas fell to $3.79, only four cents different from last week’s national average of $3.83. A year ago, the price at the pump was $3.79, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The slow drop in gas prices, despite less consumer demand, is due to the high cost of oil, which continues to prevent prices from falling faster, said Jim Lardear, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

“Pump prices will likely keep falling, but with oil stubbornly high, it’s going to be slow and unsteady. Some days might edge a bit higher,” he explained.
