Gas prices fall in Champaign after weeks of increases

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — After four straight weeks of increasing gas prices in Champaign, it seems the city’s motorists are finally catching a “brake.”

As of Monday, prices are averaging $3.61 per gallon — a two-cent decrease since last week, GasBuddy said.

The city’s average is 26 cents higher than it was last month. However, compared to one year ago, fuel prices are 12.7 cents lower. Champaign’s falling gas prices mirror the current trend of national diesel prices, which fell three cents in the last week and average $3.99 a gallon.

GasBuddy’s survey of 79 Champaign gas stations determined that the city’s cheapest station was priced at $3.46 per gallon on Sunday. The most expensive station asked for 33 cents more at $3.79 per gallon.

As of this week, GasBuddy data from more than 150,000 gas stations across the country determined that nationwide gas prices remained steady at $3.51 per gallon. That is a 16 cent rise from a month ago and 0.9-cent rise from a year ago.

“No April Fools’ joke: the national average price of gasoline has finally slowed a bit after four weeks of notable increases, stalling in the mid-$3.50s for the last week or two, while the average for diesel fell back below $4 per gallon — not a bad week for motorists as rising demand would normally put solid upward pressure on prices,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Statewide, Sunday’s cheapest station stood at $2.99 per gallon while the highest had $5.19 per gallon — a more than $2 difference. Illinois experienced a decrease of four cents per gallon since last week and currently sits at $3.85/per gallon on average.
