Gas prices usually go down after July 4th. Why are prices going up in Charlotte?

Though gas prices usually go down after the Fourth of July, Charlotte drivers are paying more at the pump now than they were during the holiday.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Charlotte is $3.36, up from $3.29 a week ago, according to AAA.

Metrics compiled by AAA show that the national average gas price rose two cents in the last week to $3.56.

The spike in gas prices, the agency said in a news release, is due to the high cost of oil.

“Gas demand has fallen nearly 10 percent since the holiday, as folks have returned to their day-to-day driving routines,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said. “Typically, this would lower gas prices, but such a move is being countered for now by the increasing cost for oil, the main ingredient in gasoline.”

The rise in oil prices comes after Saudi Arabia – one of the world’s largest oil producers – announced it would cut its supply by 1 million barrels a day, the New York Times reported.
