Gaston County holding household hazardous waste collection

A sure sign of spring is the first Household Hazardous Waste event for Gaston County! Next Saturday, March 4, 2023, our first of four events will happen at the Dallas Park, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Highway, Dallas.

We will have our regular hours of 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. You must be a Gaston County resident to utilize this service, and please come with an ID to verify your residence (a NC Driver’s license is perfect). If you are unable to make it to this collection, there will be three more events in 2023: April 1, Sept. 23, and Nov. 4, 2023.

There will be a medicine drop off in conjunction to this collection, watch for folks to be ready to accept your medications on the initial drive into the park. They will accept all prescription medications, all OTC meds, pet meds, vitamins and supplements, medicated ointments, creams, lotions and oils, liquid medications in leak-proof containers, homeopathic remedies and suppositories.

They will not accept needles or syringes, IV bags or bloody or infections wastes, full inhalers or chemotherapy medications.

Please follow the temporary signs that will direct you to the right of the first fork, to the right again, between the stables, straight to our permanent Household Hazardous Waste trailer. We ask that you remain in your vehicles, and our staff will remove items from your vehicle.

If possible, place loose items in boxes for easier removal. Paint cans do not need to be boxed, just things like cleaners, drain products, plant care stuff (examples). We will accept all paint: oil, latex, aerosol cans. We accept vehicle fluids: brake, motor oil, antifreeze, steering fluid, vehicle cleaning liquids, tire cleaners. We accept all cleaning products (liquids). We accept lawn and garden liquids and solids: any kind of product that has the potential to kill (insecticides, herbicides, pesticides).

We accept drain cleaners, asphalt cleaners, sealants, pool chemicals, mystery containers that are not labeled. We also accept thermometers and thermostats that contain mercury. We accept rechargeable batteries only. Alkaline batteries can be disposed of with your household trash.

We will accept fluorescent lamps, keep in mind this event is for homeowners only, no businesses, churches or schools may use this disposal event. We accept propane tanks and fire extinguishes that are outdated. We also accept used cooking oil.

Please do not bring any electronics or tires; these things can be disposed of at the County Convenience Sites (Tryon, Crowders Creek, Hardin, New Hope and Riverbend only).

This event is free, and we are always happy to provide this event for homeowners to safely dispose of household chemicals. If you have any question, please call and leave me a message with your phone number, and I will be happy to call you back. Keep in mind, though, I will not be in the office on March 4, 8 to 11:30 a.m., as I will be at the Dallas Park waiting for you!

I can be reached at 704-922-7729 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

And just for planning purposes, next Saturday, March 11, at our Yard Waste Facility, 1320 Philadelphia Church Road, our spring mulch sales will begin…$2/scoop, 8 a.m.-noon, 1-4 p.m. Cash only. All size vehicles are serviced, please remember to bring a tarp and rake to cover and smooth out your mulch pile. Also, call 704-922-7729 with questions!
