Gateway North will be Portland’s first new MAX station in 9 years

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – For the first time in nine years, a new MAX station is coming to Portland next month.

The Gateway North Station will open on March 4 as TriMet finishes the second phase in its years-long A Better Red project, which officials kicked off in 2021 in an effort to improve the efficiency and reach of the MAX Red Line.

For the past month, service on the Red Line has been temporarily suspended while crews build the new station that will join two new bridges built over the freeway, a new railway track, and a multi-use bike and walking path.

“Not only will these changes help riders roll more efficiently through the Gateway Transit Center – where the MAX Blue, Green and Red lines meet – but they will also prevent trains from backing up on other sections of the MAX system,” TriMet said in a press release.

Until then, the Blue and Green lines are operating multiple shuttle bus routes.

Blue line shuttles will run from Northeast Seventh to East 102nd Avenue. The Green Line will only run between the Clackamas Town Center and Southeast Main Street. Shuttles will then run between Southeast Main and the Gateway Transit Center, then up to PDX.

As a result of these service disruptions, TriMet has cautioned riders to plan for at least an extra 60 minutes for trips.
