The Gatlin Brothers continue to spread positive message; make stop at Isleta Resort in ABQ

Jan. 12—Rudy Gatlin feels at home on stage.

It's where he's been since he was a child.

Gatlin is one-third of the legendary trio, The Gatlin Brothers.

For decades, the trio of brothers have created hits that resonate with audiences. The Gatlin Brothers are headed to Albuquerque for a show at Isleta Resort & Casino on Friday, Jan. 13. They will share the stage with Crystal Gayle.

"We're planning on hitting the road more when the spring comes," Gatlin says. "We like to keep moving and performing because it's harder to get back on track when we've been away for awhile."

The trio — which includes Larry, Steve and Rudy — have been performing for more than 60 years.

Some of their hits include: "All the Gold in California," "Love is Just a Game," "Statues Without Hearts," "A Few Good Men" and "Broken Lady."

"I remember first starting out we would sing 'Broken Lady,' " Gatlin says. "We were wishing there was someone to love. We didn't think about longevity of the band at that time. We were hungry to make music and see the world."

The Gatlin Brothers have been a staple in the music industry while crossing over from country to gospel over the years.

In fact, Larry Gatlin ranks at No. 4 on Billboard's solo writer of all time with the most self-penned top 40 hits and songs.

His songs were recorded by Elvis Presley, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Glen Campbell, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Jones, Dottie West, Charlie Rich and Johnny Mathis.

Gatlin attributes the trio's longevity not only to great songwriting, but to the loyal fan base.

"What's great about our fans is that it crosses multiple generations," he says. "We've seen over the years how our music connects people together and it's still humbling. All three of us grew up on stage and that's all we know. We enjoy getting out on stage night after night and sing our hearts out."

The 70-year-old says his love for performance continues to grow.

"I'm thankful that we're still able to perform," he says. "I'm also thankful for all the surgeons that help keep it together for us. After years on the road, we do have physical ailments. As I grow older, I'm appreciative for all of it."

With a career spanning decades comes a catalog of music in the hundreds.

Gatlin says putting the set list can often be daunting.

"We've been blessed with 30 or 40 top 40 records," he says. "We probably do a third of those. We may start doing a medley of hits — and some misses. We throw in the misses to appreciate the hits."
