Gay New Jersey couple booted from Uber car after kissing on way to Zac Brown Brand concert

CAMDEN, N.J. -- Like thousands of other Zac Brown Band fans, Kristin Michele and Jenn Mangan were excited to go to the group's show in Camden, New Jersey, Friday night.

But the music was far from the couple's most memorable takeaway of the evening.

The couple booked an Uber ride for the trip to the concert venue. They were about a half-mile from home when Michele leaned over to give Mangan a kiss on the cheek.

At that point, they said, the female driver pulled over and ordered them out of the car.

A video Michele took of the confrontation between the women and the driver went viral on Facebook. It's been viewed more than 30,000 times as of Monday evening.

In the video, Michele is heard asking, "So you're kicking me out because I'm gay?"

"Yes, I am," the driver responds. "Get out."

The exchange becomes more heated and Michele tells the driver to go ahead and call the cops, adding, "You've gotta be f------ kidding me. It is 2019!"

After a few minutes of back-and-forth, the couple got out of the car, walked home and took a train to the concert, according to NJ.com.

Michele and Mangan received hundreds of supportive comments on their social media accounts after their story went public.

"Thank you everyone for proving that love is stronger than hate and thank you for the support. While I regret the language, my emotion got the best of me," Michele posted on her Facebook page. "However, I posted this (video) because I was infuriated that someone could be so mean and put that reasoning on their religious beliefs."

In a part of the conversation that was not captured on video, the women said the driver told them she did not approve of their sexuality because she is a Christian.

When Michele and Mangan contacted Uber, the ride-sharing company responded by firing the driver.

“Uber does not tolerate discrimination in any form and we have been in contact with this rider. We removed the driver’s access to the app as soon as we were made aware of this incident," spokesperson Grant Klinzman said in a statement.

Michele praised the company for its swift response.

"Uber has been outstanding in dealing with this matter so quickly. They reached out immediately following my complaint. Please do not blame Uber for this woman’s behavior," she posted.

Mangan, a mother of two, said she was also grateful for the support she received — particularly from her own 14-year-old son.

She shared her son's Instagram post about the incident on her Facebook page.

"Like come on!" the teen said. "My mom's girlfriend was in an Uber and was getting kicked out for kissing my mom."

"This is just pure stupidity and people need to stop being homophobic, transphobic and prejudiced racist dumpster fires," he added.

Expressing appreciation for the support in her family and beyond, Mangan posted, "It makes being totally humiliated a little easier knowing we have so many people on our side."
